Maitreya Abbey Development Fund

The Great Mountain Zen Center was founded in 1996 by Shishin Wick Roshi, who is still President and Teacher. His successor, Shinko Perez Sensei, shares in the teaching duties. Our zendo in Lafayette has been a place of refuge, meditation and instruction for hundreds of seekers over the last 15 years, and our main Center continues to thrive.

In late 2009, Shinko Sensei and Shishin Roshi purchased a 5.5 acre property in Berthoud, and we are in the midst of converting its 4,000 square foot farmhouse into an Abbey for residential practice in the Zen tradition. The property has numerous fruit trees and acres of hay pasture for our frisky horses and goats. Chickens, cats and dogs also roam the grounds, spreading their dharma of barks and clucks.

These are exciting days of growth for the Zen Center, but we are also mindful of the ever-present strife and scarcity felt by millions of beings throughout the world. The Abbey will be a place where suffering can be relieved, resources nurtured and cherished, and where peace and love may flourish.

The mission of Maitreya Abbey is to help create a nest of devotional energy to invite the coming of the Future Buddha, Maitreya, to this planet through Zen practice from the Heart, which will include residential and non-residential training rooted in the practice of zazen, practice to overcome the five poisons, prayer, chanting, dream practice, healing practice, processing circles, communion with nature in compassionate and harmonious partnership with human and non-human beings, creation of a self-sufficient environment and the appropriate use of natural resources. Everyone is welcome to participate in those areas that resonate with them. We would like to become a model for other communities around the globe. We are all the parents and the children of Maitreya, working, practicing and living together, preparing a home in our hearts for the coming of the Future Buddha.
